Nigeria’s Democracy Must Not Be Silenced!

Bombing Nigeria is not the answer

As voices of peace and unity, we stand firmly against any threat of violence or foreign interference that could destabilise one of Africa’s largest democracies.

The **Campaign for Government of International Unity in Africa (Cagintua) calls on all who believe in justice, democracy, and human dignity to speak for peace and defend Nigeria’s future.

Joint Appeal: Protect Nigeria’s Democracy and Prevent Foreign Military Intervention

The Campaign for Government of International Unity in Africa (Cagintua) and partner organisations call on community groups, civil society actors, and international stakeholders to support peaceful dialogue and constructive engagement in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.

Recent rhetoric from President Donald Trump suggesting the possibility of military intervention in Nigeria has caused deep concern among Africans and global advocates of peace. Such an approach would endanger millions of lives, fuel terrorism, expand human trafficking networks, and force mass migration across Africa and beyond.

Over the years, Nigeria has faced serious challenges, including terrorism, corruption, and youth unemployment. Yet, the resilience of its people and the continuity of democratic governance remain a source of pride for Africa. Any external threat or destabilising action risks undoing decades of progress, weakening both regional and global peace efforts.

Nigeria, home to over 250 million citizens, has maintained uninterrupted democracy for more than two decades. Despite many challenges, the current administration has taken bold reform steps, including introducing student-loan programmes to widen access to education and removing a long-abused fuel subsidy that enriched a few at the expense of the public. These measures, though difficult, reflect a serious effort toward economic recovery, accountability, and opportunity for the nation’s youth.

The international community should recognise and support such reforms not respond with military coercion or destabilising policies.

We believe:

Democracy must be protected, not destroyed.

Peaceful cooperation is the foundation of progress.

Foreign military actions will create chaos, not stability.

Europe and Africa must work together to promote justice, peace, and sustainable development.

Military aggression is never a solution to political or social challenges.

International partners should support Nigeria through dialogue, education, and economic reform.

African led initiatives must be prioritised in peace and development processes.

The protection of democracy in Nigeria is vital for Africa’s stability and the world’s shared security.
