Empowering Single Mothers as Seamstresses in Rutongo, Rwanda

Between October 1, 2021, and October 1, 2022, a collaborative project was undertaken in cooperation with “Katholische Gemeinde Rutongo, Rulingo Ruanda”  the aim was to empower and uplift 90 single mothers in Rutongo, Rwanda, by providing them with vocational training as seamstresses. The primary goal of the project was to improve the socioeconomic situation of these single mothers and create sustainable perspectives for their future.

The key objectives of the project were as follows:

a) To equip 90 single mothers in Rutongo with essential sewing skills and knowledge.

b) To empower the beneficiaries with entrepreneurial and business management skills.

c) To provide a conducive learning environment that fosters personal and professional growth.

d) To facilitate the creation of micro-enterprises and income-generating opportunities for the trained seamstresses.

The project comprised the following activities:

A dedicated training center was established in Rutongo, fully equipped with sewing machines, tools, and learning materials. The center was set up in collaboration with our local partner in Rutongo

The selected beneficiaries underwent an intensive vocational training program in sewing and tailoring.

The curriculum was designed to cater to both beginners and those with some prior experience in sewing. Apart from technical skills, the project also offered workshops and training sessions on entrepreneurship, financial management, and marketing. These sessions aimed to empower the beneficiaries to establish and manage their small businesses effectively.

Throughout the project duration, the single mothers received continuous mentorship and guidance from experienced seamstresses and business experts. This support was instrumental in boosting their confidence and helping them overcome challenges.

Efforts were made to create market linkages for the products made by the trainees. Collaborations with local businesses and markets were established to facilitate the sale of their handcrafted items.

By the end of the project, all 90 single mothers successfully acquired proficient sewing skills, enabling them to produce high-quality garments and other textile products.

The training and mentorship provided a significant boost to the confidence and self-esteem of the beneficiaries, as they gained a sense of independence and self-reliance.

Many of the trained seamstresses successfully set up their micro-enterprises or found employment opportunities in local textile-related businesses. This led to an improvement in their financial situation and that of their families.
