Project VeMBeB – Improving the Living Conditions of People with Disabilities After Fleeing to Brandenburg

Cagintua e.v.

Cagintue e.V. is currently spearheading a vital project aimed at enhancing the living conditions of refugees with disabilities in Brandenburg. This initiative is designed to address the unique challenges faced by this vulnerable group and to foster their integration and participation in society. Here is an in-depth look at the project’s objectives, target groups, and the strategies employed to achieve them.

Target Groups

The primary beneficiaries of this project are refugees living in Brandenburg who have physical impairments, hearing problems, and psychological issues such as depression. These individuals encounter significant obstacles that hinder their integration and social participation. Key challenges include:

  • Mobility Issues: Refugees with physical impairments often find it difficult to participate in social activities, pursue employment, or further their education. The physical layout of some accommodations exacerbates these issues, with disabled persons sometimes housed on upper floors while communal facilities like kitchens are located on the ground floor.
  • Accessibility: Navigating within refugee accommodations can be problematic for those with mobility limitations. Additionally, the remote location of some shelters restricts access to social activities and the development of supportive social networks.
  • Transportation: Refugees with disabilities may miss the last bus to their accommodations due to mobility issues, forcing them to spend the night at stations.
  • Legal and Social Isolation: The precarious “Kettenduldung” status adds to the frustration and uncertainty, while the lack of accessible and affordable housing presents a significant hurdle.

Access to Target Groups

Cagintue e.V. accesses the target groups through established networks and close contacts within refugee accommodations. Collaborations with other migrant organizations and the Brandenburg Integration Commissioner facilitate the identification and outreach to disabled refugees. This network, built through years of cooperation with various refugee initiatives, ensures a direct and trustworthy relationship with the target group, enabling a deeper understanding of their needs and challenges.

Project Goals

The project aims to achieve the following goals, particularly from the perspective of the target group:

  1. Volunteer Support Network: Train volunteers, including other refugees, to assist disabled refugees in selected accommodations. This support includes accompanying them to offices, helping with necessary documentation, finding accessible housing, and transporting their belongings when changing accommodation.
  2. Accessible Education and Employment: Support specialized educational programs and vocational training tailored to the needs of disabled refugees to improve their employment prospects.
  3. Barrier-Free Communication: Provide sign language interpreters and other communication aids to help refugees with hearing impairments communicate effectively with medical professionals, authorities, and educational institutions.
  4. Reduction of Discrimination: Promote awareness campaigns to reduce discrimination and stigma against disabled refugees within the refugee community and society at large.
  5. Support for Single Mothers: Offer specific support services for single mothers with disabilities, including childcare assistance and daily life management.
  6. Legal Assistance: Provide legal advice and support to refugees with “Kettenduldung” status to clarify and improve their legal situation.
  7. Improved Living Conditions: Enhance overall living conditions and social participation by creating accessible environments, improving access to education and the labor market, and reducing discrimination.
